Chapter 7: Business Requirement Document (BRD) and Checklists

Business Requirement Document (BRD) is an important document created by Business Analyst. It is used throughout the project life cycle. It is sometimes also referred to as Business Requirement Specification (BRS).

It provides specifications about what product/Service/Software to be delivered to meet the business needs. BRD will be used as main communication document to communicate the requirements to Software developers, Software Testers and end users.

Software developers use this document to prepare the functional specification and develop the working software. Software testers use this document to create the software test plans. End users use this document to check and ensure that requirements are covered. Business analyst will keep this as a reference document.

BRS/BRD will mainly consists of the following:

  • Business context, scope, and background, including reasons for change
  • Glossaries of business terms
  • Key business stakeholders that have requirements
  • Constraints imposed by the business or other systems
  • Data flow diagrams to illustrate how data flows through the information systems
  • Flow Charts to depict business process models

Sample BRS/BRD Template: BRD template may slightly vary from organization to organization and project to project. However the main structure and purpose remains same.
